Hi! I really like your Witchy comic! I've been looking through your FAQ and could not find anyone asking this so I wanted to know: what font to you use? I am working on a comic and I cant find a good font for it but the one you use is really good. If you don't want others using it through, thats fine. Maybe you know of a good font that is similar ? thanks for any help and I'm sorry if this has been asked before!

Hi! The font I use for Witchy is something I made using calligraphr: https://www.calligraphr.com/en/ but is for my personal use only, sorry! However I think calligraphr is a great option if you want to really personalise your comic lettering. Other than that, there’s quite a few nice looking handwriting fonts on google fonts, which are all free to use for commercial use.

Nyneve said earlier that Emperor Jung stopped the mass burnings under his rule. If that's the case, why was she so terrified when she was given a position on the guard? Was there still a good chance she could get burned like her father?

i’ll go into this more in the story but i’ve been asked about it once before so I’lll answer here for clarity– by mass burnings she means burnings on a mass scale. burnings still happen, but there was a period of time when the kingdom was particularly aggressive in cracking down on long haired witches – this is the period in which Nyneve’s father was killed.

Hey! I love your comic Witchy :) the new page doesn't seem to be up on the website though (maybe you already know this, oops!) thank you for all your hard work

http://witchycomic.com/faq/ try the methods out in the top faq and let me know if youre still experiencing the problem!

About how tall is Prill?

she is… around 6′2, batu and her are really close in height but he’s closer to 6′1… and nyneve is at least full foot shorter than both of them at 5′1

hi! i love your webcomic and i've been rereading it recently and i just wanted to ask what the difference between offensive and hex magic is? also it would be great if you could explain how magic is categorized in hyalin. thank you!! :)

hi, this will be explored more in the comic, especially when we learn more about how the witch guard is structured, but it’s not spoilery, so i can explain here too:

there are two streams of what is referred to as “martial magic” which is magic used in combat. these are “offensive magic” and “defensive magic” underneath these headings there are two more streams:

underneath “offensive magic” there is assault magic and hex magic. assault magic is kind of self explanatory - it’s magic used to injure opponents - pretty straightforward. hex magic is more like casting magic that causes status ailments, think poison or confusion in an rpg.

underneath “defensive magic” falls protective magic and illusion magic. protective magic is basically creating magical shields that either absorbs or reflects assault magic.

illusion magic is in a grey area: it’s mostly used defensively (usually to mislead opponents in order to keep your allies safe. an in-comic example of this would be the camouflage glamours that nyneve also mentions in chapter 3.) but it’s occasionally used offensively. hex magic is similar in that it mostly falls into offensive magic, but can be used defensively as well.

in the witch guard, the majority of knights must specialise in one of these four streams. a complete unit is comprised of at least one knight in each of these streams. there are other streams of magic that don’t fall under martial magic, however.

Chapter 3 of Witchy ended, sooooooo.... when is the print edition coming out? Will you fund it on Kickstarter?

ha ha i get a lot of questions about this and i guess i should be honest! there’s a lot of work that still needs to go into witchy to prepare it for print, and also, unfortunately, i am a full time student studying abroad and honestly im already struggling to find the time to fulfill patreon goals and general house-keeping stuff for witchy.

I AM chipping away slowly at preparation stuff, but it’s really at the bottom of my to-do list, and the thought of running an entire kickstarter campaign on top of all the things i’m already doing is daunting. also, the cost and time that it would take for me to send out packages from denmark is prohibitive. (yes, i know there are kickstarter fulfillment companies but that’s a whole other thing)

for now it’s more important for me to focus on school work and to continue pumping out good quality pages for the comic, but a print edition of witchy is not off the table… it might just take me a year or two more. sorry to everyone looking forward to a print version, i know i promised it would come sooner but i just don’t have room in my life to make it a priority right now.

I have a question if I may: is the name of the wandering spirit/cursed familiar/auspicious sign Banana? Or Ba Nana? Or am I reading it wrong on both fronts?

it’s just banana! you’re correct

Hi ariel i was wondering if nyneves name comes from the city of nineveh? The pronounciation just seems p similar

hah, i wish it was! i wasn’t even aware that nineveh was a place before you sent this ask. It would be more fitting to name her after that tho, instead of her actual name.. the pronunciation is a bit different tho, nyneve is just nin-eve

I just started following this comic and I looked through your asks to see if someone had asked but I didnt see anyone mention it so I was wondering, do bangs not hold magical power? In the comic i see a lot of the characters have bangs but everyone was really like "!!!!" and shocked about nyneve cutting her hair off!! also she left her bangs was this for you to be able to draw her easier or was it just that bangs in this universe can be cut/arent a big deal?? Thanks! :)

ah ive answered this before but all bangs and extra hair additions in the comic are glamours; spells that extend or change the appearance of the hair. i imagine nyneve is pretty much 100% bald at this point and just left her bangs out of habit.

Hi! Love your comic, i have some questions that i couldn't find the answer to in your faq tag. Does facial hair exist in the Witchy universe? Would a beard affect someones power, or is that only determined by the hair on your head? Do people shave or is it bad to cut off ANY hair, even face, leg, or underarm hair?

facial hair does exist,  but only the hair on your head affects your magical ability. shaving anything else is pretty much accepted anywhere in hyalin. you might find a few fringe groups that consider body hair equally as important as head hair.

So, hair lenght is the ultimate measurement of magic power (as far as we know), but does volume have any impact on it too? For example, Veda's hair is not that long compared to other witches, but dang, does it have a presence. Or what about an afro? :o

yeah, curly hair’s length is measured as if it were pulled taut (straight), which does add a bit of length. in the case of veda, she has fairly loose curls and i can’t imagine it would be more than a couple of inches longer. idra is a good example, because she has dreadlocks, so her hair would be a lot longer than it seems.

What is most important to you with storytelling? Do you have a "goal"? Also, do u ever get discouraged with comics? How do you keep it up? Absolutely wonderful comic by the way!! :y

for me nothing beats being sincere and honest… be true to the humanity in your characters. be true to yourself. don’t get caught up in pretension; there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do something fun and action based, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to write about romance, just be authentic when you do those things and you won’t fall into stereotypes and create a boring story. write what you want to read, i can guarantee there’ll be others that want to read it as well. My initial desire to create witchy came out of writing a shonen story with better female representation.

i mean, my goal is to finish witchy with like, a modicum of the depth a world like hyalin is owed. i want to be able to grapple with its complex power dynamics and spiritual aspects and class issues while still maintaining a strong narrative and strong characters (and fun action) until the end.

sometimes I get tired… some weeks i wish i could just relax and not do a page, and sleep for eternity, but i keep going because i love the story and i want to see it finished eventually!! if it werent for witchy i would not have improved so much, and i wouldnt have made so many wonderful fans and friends.

you probs get this question a lot but what are your main inspirations into the style, design, and culture shown in Witchy?? Love your stuff btw! Keep it up!!!!

well generally it’s like melting-pot asia so you will probably see little bits of influence from all over asia, but specifically it leans more towards the islamic, south, and south east parts of asian design. I feel like most asian influenced media leans towards east asian stuff, and being south east asian myself I wanted to show asia as more than just china and japan.

do you have any old concept art of the witchy cast? anyone change a lot from their initial design?

original nyneve and prill, who i designed roughly around the same time… they were the earliest characters i made that still exist in the comic today. i designed batu pretty late, he just got bigger and more fat. there are other characters whose designs have changed but they are Secret

how do u come up w ideas for comics? do you have a process or anything? if thats too broad how did u think up witchy? (which i loooove btw)

usually most of my comics or ideas start with just like, a small concept or a character design and my mind goes wild from there, i start thinking about how, for example, what context would be interesting or unusual for a particular character to exist in, that sort of thing. witchy started as a story about a useless outcast witch who would dye her hair weird colours to stand out and to compensate for her lack of magic skills. she lived in a small and very dour village and was not respected by her peers. for a time it was about hair colour = hair strength, and it was actually a friend that suggested hair length instead of colour, so talk to your friends about your ideas too!!
