Is it longer than nyneve or her dad’s hair?
nyneve’s hair is about mid calf length. her dad’s hair was a only about his height.
It’s like jungle without the le
it’s definitely on the table at the moment! I will absolutely do a print-run of the first volume hoooopefully before the end of the year, and i’ve looked into printing and shipping options, but i still havent really thought about funding for it. the setback of kickstarter is the whole backer rewards thing; I really don’t want to do a campaign with all the add-ons, i just want to do something where you buy the book and you just get the book. for me, operating remotely from any kind of permanent home base makes extras really hard. i know some people have done bare-bones campaigns like that tho!! however it’s not something i need to decide on until i finish chapter 3, which is still several months away.
I just discovered witchy and i must say that i love it alot! THE WORLD IS SO INTERESTING I CANT WAIT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT IT! and your art style is so neat, you make me sob with the use of colors it is so good. i was wondering if there are some ref sheets of the characters? i want to make fanart, and refsheets are very helpful when it comes to that. Anyway, i hope you have a nice day and i cant wait to see what happens in witchy! :D
hey!! thanks a lot, im glad you’re enjoying witchy!! i dont actually use ref sheets for the main characters bc i pretty much have them memorised, but here’s something that i happened to draw today that might help? otherwise you’ll have to eyeball the comic a bit and check out the witchy tag here, sorry!

yes we dooo!!!!!!! there are flashes here and there, but a proper exploration of his past won’t be for quite a while.
jung is viceroy of hyalin. this means he has the power equivalent of royalty, so he’s the one that calls the shots.

nyneve’s hair is about mid calf length. her dad’s hair was a only about his height.
witchy is handwritten now, but the old font is called “indy pimp”. i’d say jung’s hair is between double and triple his height. it’s a very tight braid.
thank u 4 ur batu patronage jillian
a charm like nyneve’s is a VERY low level spell so it’s not particularly draining, but it’s kind of a practice/age thing? because nyneve has been hiding her hair for more than half her life it’s basically second nature at this point. when she was younger she had to be more careful not to accidentally undo her charm, but even then it would take something very distracting or shocking to undo such a spell.
aha thank you… i love to make my readers suffer…
what came first with witchy was the concept then a vague idea of the story, and then i kind of fleshed out the characters while i built up the plot? i had a very clear idea of who i wanted prill and batu to be from the beginning, but nyneve and veda have developed a lot since i actually started posting the comic.
i dont recommend that as a way of working though, I mainly did it because if i didnt start witchy when i did i probably wouldnt have started it ever, and it’s an experiment for me so i just went with the flow. nyneve and veda are becoming a lot easier to write now, but prill and batu were easy from the very beginning.
I AM a very plot oriented writer, but when you have a very clear, distinct cast of characters from the beginning, driving the plot forward becomes a whole lot simpler.
Hey! first of all this is a super good question, thank you. Witchy was actually originally a much shorter story than it has become, because I got super caught up in the world and all the complexities that arise from hair = power. It wasn’t really a conscious decision to go long form over short form, It was just a matter of me becoming connected with the ideas and characters in this world. However, even though Witchy is long form, I think of each chapter in an episodical sense. Imagining these chapters as short stories that join to create a whole helps to not… completely overwhelm me with the scale of this project.
as for the second part of your question - staying jazzed - the key for me is that… I haven’t written a script for Witchy. Apart from the end, which I have planned, and 5 or 6 goal markers on the way to that point (both of which are vague and leave me with a lot of room to grow), I have no idea how Witchy might turn out. the joy of creating Witchy for me is seeing the story I planned evolve as the characters grow and make certain choices and decisions. I’m constantly excited about what the future will hold! If I plan a scene that won’t happen for a year, by the time I get there a lot will have changed in the way it’s delivered. For me, it’s a much more natural way to tell a story, at least in this stage of my life, because I’m still learning so much about telling a good story. The latter half of chapter 3 is something I’ve had planned since the very beginning, but even within the last month a lot has changed about it, for the better. I think when writing a long form webcomic it’s good to not tie yourself down too much.
With art, I’ve never really been one to feel self conscious of old drawings. For me, they’re just a sign that I’ve improved and that I continue to grow. I look back on the early pages of Witchy with pride because I can see my improvement between then and now. If im feeling down about a page I’m working on, looking at those old pages makes it a little easier to sit down and work on a mediocre page. (although I have made some design choices that i have to stick with that I kind of regret, ie; jung’s staff. you can expect that design to slowly evolve over time, heh)
From the beginning, Witchy was a project that I told myself it’s ok to experiment on. It’s ok to fuck up and do bad drawings one week, because there’s always next week. I just have to keep moving forward. I started witchy with the FULL knowledge that it’s not my opus and I’m not going to treat it as such, I’m just going to enjoy the process.
yeah, it’s a hard j
if you ever see written language that’s important in witchy, it will be written in english for clarity, but it’s definitely not the actual written language. It wouldn’t resemble chinese either. I don’t actually have an idea of what it “officially” looks like, but I would definitely put the aesthetic of it closer to arabic, mongolian, hindi, or thai script. something elegant with a lot of curves. considering that I lean more towards islamic and south/south-east asian design in witchy, these would make more sense than chinese, too.
ah back when i started using witchy i was using A4 deleter manga paper and a g-nib but i havent inked a page traditionally for abt 50 or so pages now… i just dont have the space where im currently living!
this will be covered in the comic, but it’s not really spoilery so it’s fine for me to explain. the hyalinese don’t believe in gods so much as their existence is a fact. Similar to shintoism, spirits/gods, whatever you want to call them, reside in every natural thing, from rivers, to rocks, trees, and plants - animals too. (although the spirits within people and animals are regarded as a seperate entity to those in “inanimate” objects) The existence of spirits is directly related to the existence of magic in Hyalin.
