hadia and grete live in a world where big business bought out the government and built enormous factories and pylons and smoke stacks, polluting the air and making it unbreathable for most of the population. this caused the poor to be driven underground, as the rich sat happily in their air conditioned highrises. no one really knows what happens in those factories, because no one goes in or out. but the factory owners keep the rich happy, so they do nothing. hadia and grete are political activists, drawn together by chance when they discover 08 (or ayiti, as she’s later dubbed) a strange mutant girl who has supposedly escaped from a factory. together they try to bring down the factories with the help of various underground dwellers. grete is a snarky tactical prodigy with a giant tsundere crush on hadia. she is also one of the few people able to breathe on the surface. hadia is an ex-army or police officer probably? dishonourably discharged for doing the right thing. she is kind of bossy and grete and her don’t get along v well. ayiti is sheltered but likes having fun with her crazy friends whoa!!
